Ep 9 | From Sight Loss to Life Gain: My Unseen Journey 🌟 feat. Gareth Smith
In this episode of Every L Podcast, Gareth bravely shares his journey of coming to terms with his visual impairment (called Retinitis Pigmentosa - RP) and the difficulty of admitting that he needed help. The conversation touches on the importance of self-kindness, reflection, and having supportive people in our lives.
More about Gareth:
Almost 7 years ago I was diagnosed with a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) & registered as severely sight impaired (legally blind). The main symptoms of my condition are having no peripheral vision and severely reduced vision in dark and dim light. Imagine looking through cardboard tubes. It is a progressive condition with no current cure.
Since then I’ve been working on trying to accept my new label of being a disabled adult and parent. Especially as the condition I have is hereditary and could potentially be passed on.  Only recently I’ve realised that I’ve not been coping well with the fact I’m going blind, I’ve been masking my feeling and thoughts to try and protect myself and others.
In the last few years, I have tried to make a positive impact and use my experiences to help others who have had similar experiences.  I use my voice to try to do whatever I can to educate and raise awareness of visual impairments and all disabilities.
